That's going to be a monster rig. YMMV on the chip though. I've seen (rare) as high as 5.6GHz chips and as low as my lowly 5.1GHz chip. Most will do 5.3GHz, so it's very similar to 2600K's. Unless you just want something right now, I'd wait for Ivy and see how it performs. SNB-E is good for 3D benching on Vantage, 3DMark11 and heaven. It's a powerhouse for folding. That's about it for bencher's purposes. If you want a more well-rounded system, hold your money for Ivy.

That said, don't get me wrong, SNB-E is ridiculously powerful and I love the platform. For (expensive) daily drivers and benching heavily-threaded loads, only a 6GHz+ 980X/990X will beat it. It's also crazy strong with multi-threaded productivity like rendering/encoding/etc. But if you like SuperPi, PiFast, 3Dmark06 and other benches that don't necessarily care about thread count, you're better off waiting to at least see how Ivy shakes out.

My $0.02, summed up: the platform is fun and extremely powerful. You're not going to set any 2D records with it though; the clock walls are just too low at this point.

As Hokie said the SNB-E isn't cheap, but if I had to pick I would go with i7 3930k now instead of waiting.
Heres some decent RAM to consider.

I had to switch over to SNB-E for 24/7 use for now b/c I got a Sandy Bridge board in to review. Perhaps some photos might help you decide? :whistling:

Awesome! Can't wait to see your results. You'll love the system, especially coming from Thuban. :)

Did I tell you I killed ye old 8150 the other day? Got mad that it wouldn't go higher and gave it 2.3V. It didn't like that.

at 2.3v i would say that was intentional suicide.

i went through 2 fx8120's . the second one was only clocked to 4.0ghz folding. recieved a new one the other day and put it in a gamer for a freind with a 6970. he loves it and he does not overclock so i hope it lives.it out my hair at least .

Meh. You need the unlocked multi if you're really going to push clocks. There isn't much room past the 125MHz strap, which means ~4.75GHz plus or minus a bit. Plus you'll lose the strength of the platform with multi-threaded apps and twelve threads. I'd steer clear of that one.

What...at Newegg? No, I have no idea. Not my purview, but I'm flattered you think I might. :)

I think you can still get them, just not from the normal spots.
Did a quick google on the model number, and amazon has 17 in stock, at least so they claim.

It does cost more tho.
