Hi guys!

My dad is finnaly retiring is old P4 775...

I need some help to build him a new one, since I'm not really up to date on the latest tech, because of college (both lack of free time AND money).
This one will be on 24/7.. so I might as well use it to fold!

I'll need the following:

CPU
Motherboard
Memory
PSU

Already have these items, which will be "recycled"

HDD's -> SATA2 WesternDigital 500gb (less than 2 years old IIRC) + two other smaller hdd's. I believe one of them is IDE/PATA
GFX -> ATI/AMD 34xx or 36xx, can't recall exactly... It's also only a couple of years old, his old one went kaput. It's PCI-Express.
dvd player, which I suspect might be IDE/PATA as well.
case
etc

It will need virtualization (not sure if every new cpu has those features).

My thoughts so far:

CPU - Intel Core i3 2100 3.1GHz / Intel Core i5 2300 2.8GHz / Intel Core i5 2400 3.1GHz ... the i5's cost 50% more, but they're quad's.
Motherboard - No idea. It would probably be very good if it had support for IDE/PATA. Asus, MSI and Gigabyte are the most readily available around here.
Memory - Corsair 2x2048MB DDR3 1333Mhz XMS3 or similar.. I've also seen the 1600mhz version for about the same price (but 1.65v rather than 1.5v, I believe). Both CL9 I think.
PSU - Corsair CX430 or CX500. No gaming, meaning really no stress on that soft GFX. Shouldn't really need more than the 430 I believe.

Thoughts and suggestions?

Forgot to mention that... It's not really fixed at a certain value but... I'm using euros, but for simplicity.. I'd say 350 to 500 USD.

Obviously, the cheaper, the better.

Problem #1 - I don't see any P67 boards with IDE ports.

This has IDE.. opinions?

(not really going to do any serious overclock with this thing.. not sure if it's even going to be overclocked at all... maybe just a very light oc).

No problem ;)

Thanks anyway.

Right now I'm looking at that board and the i5 2400 as my main option.

Thanks for the heads up!

PATA 1 x ATA133 2 Dev. Max <- that's 2 devices on 1 connection, I believe.

As for the rest.. shame on the no overclocking thingy.

I'll talk to him and see what he prefers... and how flexible the budget is.

Like wolfie said, the only options that will allow overclocking is the P67 chipset, and a cpu K series. (2600K, 2500K)

The H67 chipsets are more for people that are going to use the CPU/GPU (2nd gen. i series [Sandy]), as there video processor. (onboard Graphics)

Pretty much, any new motherboard (mostly), are going to lack a IDE connection (& floppy)
Even most of the X58 boards lack a IDE & floppy.

Hey Crom, have you thought about going AMD? It could be cheaper for you!

My dad decided he was in a bit of a hurry, and ended up buying the computer this week already (I built it yesterday).

He ended up going for the following:

Core i5 2400
Asus P8H67-M Evo (this board DOES support 2xIDE, that's why he ended up with this one).
2x2GB G-Skill something 1333mhz cl9
Corsair CX-500

(and then ATI 3650 and a 500gb and a 160gb WD HDD's, "recycled" from his old rig).

It's a nice cheap rig, more than enough for what he uses it. Working flawlessly so far.

Thank you all for the input.
